Postural Disorders
Posture is the position of a person’s body when standing, sitting, or lying down. Good posture allows us to sit, stand, walk or lie in positions where the least amount of strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments throughout the body during movement or weight-bearing activities.
Maintaining correct posture
- Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly. This can help prevent the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis.
- Reduces the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together and prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions.
- Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and thus can prevents strain or overuse problems which could lead to backache and muscular pain.
- Contributes to a good appearance.
Several factors contribute to poor posture-most commonly, habits of sitting or standing in certain positions, stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak postural muscles, abnormally tight muscles, and high-heeled shoes. In addition, decreased flexibility, a poor work environment, incorrect working posture, and lack of stretching and strengthening activities.
Innovative Physical Therapy can help by evaluating your current posture, assessing the muscle , fascial, and bony positions of your body, and assessing your current work or recreational activities that may be contributing to your postural issues. We will then work with you to develop a stretching and strengthening program combined with manual techniques to improve your posture.
